Got your Santa hat on? Trying to think of a suitable gift for the kids?
You need something that will light up their faces on the 25th, without breaking the bank in the process. And here at RopesDirect, we reckon we have just the thing…
A wooden swing.
Isn’t this a great idea?
Hang it inside if you have a beam, or hang it outside and let the little ones run off some steam this winter. Our rope swings can provide hours of fun and enjoyment over the festive period and the whole year through. Starting from around £18, they’re budget-friendly too.
No.1 on this year’s wish list – an indoor wooden swing
Technically speaking, any of the rope swings available in our ‘Play is Fun!’ collection would be suitable for indoor use. But due to its compact size, minimal fittings and easy installation process, we particularly recommend the Children’s Wooden Monkey Swing – priced at £31.98.
Made from varnished plywood, the seat measures 280mm wide – and can hold up to 70kg (11 stone) in weight. It’s fitted with a length of 12mm soft-feel synthetic hemp rope. Which means, whilst it’s kind to little fingers, it’s also super strong (and safe!) and can be hung with minimal disruption to your home.
The easiest way to install an indoor rope swing is by using a swing hook.
At RopesDirect, we currently stock three types:
Whilst all three of these are compatible with the monkey swing – and suitable for fitting on a wooden house beam – for most customers we recommend the J swing, available for just £5.34.
How to hang a rope swing from a beam
The installation process will vary slightly, depending on the products chosen and where you’d like your new indoor wooden swing to go. But regardless of the options selected – or whether you’d class yourself as a DIY novice or expert – it’s pretty quick and easy.
Send the kids to bed on Christmas eve, and it’ll be up and swinging before Santa arrives!
To help, we recently produced a handy YouTube video, which demonstrates exactly how to hang the monkey swing outlined above – step-by-step – using a J swing hook from our store. So if you’re unsure how to get started, take a look and follow these three steps:
Step 1: Drill
First things first, drill one 12mm hole all the way through the wooden beam – to take the shank of the swing hook. As well as a second, shallow hole, in which the hook end can fit snugly.
Thread the J swing hook through the main hole and secure it in place using the nut and washer supplied.
Step 2: Adjust
Our wooden monkey swing comes pre-fitted with a height-adjustable rope. And in most cases, this is long enough for the swing to be hung from the wooden beam or ceiling at an appropriate height. But if not, an adjustment rope can be used to provide the extra length.
These are also available in our store, starting from the affordable price of £7.92. And they come in various sizes, ranging from 60cm to 135cm. So remember to measure up before placing your order.
Step 3: Hang the swing
The last step is super simple.
Attach the metal ring of the adjustment rope to the carabiner of your J swing hook.
Then, pass the other end of the adjustment rope through the metal ring of the swing rope, and secure it using the ‘adjustable eight’. This works a bit like a belt buckle. Just push a small loop of the adjustable rope through the fitting, insert the buckle through the loop to close it and pull tight.
To fix the seat at the right height, you can either use the adjustment rope or the adjuster that’s pre-fitted on the indoor rope swing itself. Or, if an adjustment rope isn’t required, simply attach the metal ring directly to the J swing hook and adjust the length using the pre-fitted adjuster.
