What is jute string?

Jute string is made from the natural, organic fibre – jute.

Harvested from the bark of a jute plant, the individual fibres are tightly spun to create a coarse three-ply twine or string – with a number of beneficial properties. For example, it’s:

• eco-friendly and biodegradable
• lightweight and flexible
• durable
• resistant to heat and UV light
• soft-to-touch, with a smooth yet hairy texture
• suitable for knotting (good knot retention)

Typically, jute string has a rustic ‘sandy brown’ colour. But it can also be easily coloured using a standard fabric dye – just like our green jute string. It can also be treated with tar, improving its weather resistance and making it more suitable for prolonged outdoor use.

What can jute twine string be used for?

Jute twine string is ideal for a variety of home-based applications, including:

• arts, crafts and hobbies
• gift wrapping
• packaging and parcels
• gardening (e.g. to support climbing plants)

It’s also commonly chosen for business purposes. For example, natural jute string is often used to make environmentally friendly packaging or to create an eco-conscious product.

It’s particularly useful in the horticultural industry – where it’s used for supporting crops

Tarred jute twine is often used on traditional boats for whipping.
