Synthetic hemp rope is one of our most popular ropes – and with good reason.
Whilst it looks like a natural hemp rope, it’s actually made from spun polypropylene. So not only does it have a fantastic ‘traditional rope’ appearance, it’s also strong and durable. It won’t swell or shrink when wet, it floats on water, it’s easier on the skin than natural hemp and demonstrates excellent weather and UV resistance.
As such, it’s a suitable option for extended outdoor use and a great choice for garden projects, including decking, rope fences, handrails and more.

Our synthetic hemp is available to buy:
- by the metre – up to one continuous length of 220m
- wound on reels – in lengths of 40m, 50m, 70m, 100m, 200m and 220m
- in coils – measuring 100m or 220m long
Plus, you can choose from a broad spectrum of diameters, ranging from thin ropes of just 4mm to hefty options measuring up to 65mm. So whatever your needs or preferences, we’re bound to have a synthetic hemp product that suits you.
We also stock a selection of quality brass fittings, including end hooks, end cups/plates, end caps and centre brackets that will finish your project in style.

What can synthetic hemp be used for?
Synthetic hemp offers unmatched versatility.
It’s flexible and soft to the touch, yet easy to grip. It is easily spliced and takes knots well. Combined with its desirable rustic appearance, strength and overall resilience to wear and tear, it is a fantastic candidate for both indoor and outdoor settings, and a wide range of home and commercial projects.
Very often it’s chosen for garden projects.
As it’s fully weatherproof and resistant to UV, rot, mould and mildew, synthetic hemp is one of the hardiest options available for extended outdoor use. Perfect for use as decking rope, in rope fences and handrails, lawn edging, rose swags, swing seats etc, as well as on ships and boats, in construction, and kids’ play areas (used to make garden swings, rope ladders, climbing ropes and more).

Synthetic fibre rope doesn’t shrink or swell when it gets wet, and the diameter tends to be more precise than with natural fibre rope. However, some small discrepancies can still occur. So if you plan to pass your synthetic hemp through posts – for example, on decking or as garden rails – please wait for the rope to arrive before drilling holes.
Generally, the holes will need to be larger than the rope’s diameter. We advise drilling a test hole on some spare timber so you can match the size with the rope you have in your hand. There is more information on measuring properly here.

Is there a difference between synthetic hemp rope and polyhemp rope?
No, not at all – they’re just two terms used interchangeably to describe the same thing. A rope made from spun polypropylene with a ‘natural hemp’ aesthetic.
In addition to polyhemp rope, you may also see synthetic hemp rope referred to as synthetic hemp, hempex rope or hardy hemp. It’s all just the same thing, and when you’re shopping for synthetic hemp products online, it doesn’t really matter which term you use – it’s the quality and price that matter most to us at RopesDirect.
